Plant History: Koos Manufacturing was a new startup facility to manufacture custom designed denim outerwear and to specialize in the stonewashing process. The garment washing and stonewashing processes as well as the wastewater treatment facility was originally designed by Ellis Corporation. Applied Process Technology worked closely with Ellis and provided the tertiary filtration equipment. This equipment was required due to the environmental impact and the costly water surcharges that Koos was facing from the County and City of Los Angeles.

Plant Description: Ellis Corporation designed the wastewater treatment facility to chemically treat and remove the solids so that the majority of the flow stream could be reused and recycled and minimize discharge to the sewer. The facility is confined with a small footprint with limited access. Upon discharge from the washing and stonewashing machines, the waste flows by gravity to a sump equipped with vertical mixers to keep solids in suspension. Waste is then pumped to the flash mix/flocculation chamber portion of the inclined plate clarifier and chemically treated. Following the clarifier, the water is pumped to a heat exchanger and on to the Centra-flo Gravity Sand Filter. After filtration, the water flows by gravity to another holding tank and is then pumped to several large 15,000 gallon insulated storage tanks for future reuse.

Tertiary Filters: The Centra-flo Gravity Sand Filter is designed to remove suspended solids from the flow stream after the clarifier. The design flow to the filter is 125 gpm with average solids loading being 10 mg/l TSS and a maximum of 50 mg/l TSS. The filter removes 75 to 80% of the influent TSS and produces water with 2 NTU or less.

Filter Startup: The first Centra-flo was put on line in September 1995.

After nine (9) months of successful operation, Koos decided expand their reuse capacity and added another Centra-flo to the process stream, making a total of 250 gpm of reuse water on a continuous 24 hour a day basis.
